Chart the Bubble

They say a “picture is worth a thousand words”. Well, I wonder what they would say about a dynamic picture that lets you compare the home prices (as an index) of over 450 different U.S. regions.

Why not Judge for yourself? Take a look at my new Home Price Index tool.

The data driving the tool comes directly from the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO) and is derived from mortgage information supplied by Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. Read the official report for more technical description of how the index values are computed.

Better yet, the tool allows you to mix and compare any number of statistical regions on the same chart as well as selecting the specific range of years to include (from 1975 to the present quarter).

There is an index series for the nation as a whole as well as for each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Additionally, there are 9 Census regions and over 350 metropolitan regions as well.

Also, in the browser, the charts are just simple images so feel free to save them to your machine and pass them around!

Again, if you notice any issues or simply have comments, please email me.
